Core Values

I. Ethics

For over 67 years, Nutter Home Loans has lived by a set of sensible moral principles which govern how we do business. One of these principles is that if a loan isn’t good for our customer, it’s not good for us. We want our customers to enjoy the fruits of homeownership and not put themselves in a precarious financial situation later on down the road. Seems pretty obvious, right? It was this thinking which led us to refuse to engage in the evils of subprime lending in the 1990s and 2000s. By comparison, dozens of Wall Street banks and thousands of our competitors had no problem gouging their customers and putting them in risky loans which ultimately caused those customers to lose their homes and help plunge the world into a global recession. We could’ve made millions by doing subprime lending but our ethical principles just wouldn’t let us.

Another ethical principle we hold dear is fair housing. We believe that every person, no matter the color of their skin, their gender, their religion or their sexual preference, should have access to quality mortgage financing. For this reason, Nutter was one of the first lenders in the Midwest to close a loan for an African-American family, the first lender to treat a married woman’s income the same as her husband’s, the first lender in the nation to close an FHA Reverse Mortgage for a senior citizen and one of the first lenders to collaborate with HUD to help delinquent borrowers keep their homes.

II. Service

Every mortgage company has a Customer Service Department but how many of those companies actually provide quality ‘Service’ to their customers? In this day and age, very few. As a family-owned company, we believe in treating people the way we like to be treated, like they’re a part of our family. We don’t treat our customers like they’re a 12-digit number.

At Nutter, when you call us during business hours you’ll always talk to a real person and not an automated system. Our Loan Officers and Customer Service Representatives are non-commissioned and very experienced - many of them have worked here for more than 10 years. And we’re friendly!

Our website is a great resource for our customers and includes a Live Chat option so you can get answers to your questions quickly. We also provide an Online Customer Service Portal which allows our customers to access their account 24 hours a day so they can research their account and/or make payments.

III. Community

Nutter Home Loans believes that homeownership forms the foundation for strong communities and in order for communities to succeed, companies like ours have to pitch in and help. Our founder, James B. Nutter, Sr., was a U.S. Army Veteran who started the business by helping other Veterans and soldiers buy houses. Since then, the Nutter Company has helped hundreds of thousands of families achieve the American dream of homeownership.

Nutter believes in not only giving to charitable organizations, but also in being actively engaged in those charities as well as other civic projects. Over the years, the Nutter Company and the Nutter family have donated millions of dollars to the United Way, Children’s Mercy Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, National World War I Museum, Negro Leagues Hall of Fame, Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, University Academy, Kansas City Public Schools, YMCA, Wayside Waifs, Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Congress, Women’s Employment Network, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and more. In addition, Nutter employees and members of the Nutter family have joined dozens of charitable boards and have participated in numerous civic projects like the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial, Kansas City Streetlights Program, Nutter Ivanhoe Community Center, Sybil Silkwood Children’s Park and the Union Station Restoration Project.

Summary

Research shows that the single largest investment that many Americans will make during their lifetimes is purchasing a home. For such an important investment, it is essential that you choose the right lender with whom to work, one who is trustworthy and who places the interest of their customers above that of the almighty dollar. As you can see, Nutter’s core values of Ethics, Service and Community not only describe who we are as a company but also the way in which we do business. We believe that it’s the right way to do business, and we think you will too.
